Mould blowing

Each Piece in this collection of works is the result of creating my own designs with the use of interchangeable parts to form a blow mould. The forms were inspired by brutalist architecture and the surface texture from the layering of silhouettes of buildings, rooftops and architectural components.
I used a combination of the CAD technologies, Tinkercad and Fusion to create my initial designs. Tinkercad is great for designing with simpler shapes, which is what works best with the CNC machine. Designing to work around the logistics of the machine led to having multiple re-designs of the shapes, avoiding certain angles and designing to the widths and shapes of the drill bits I have available to me – as well as this, ensuring that the design can be used afterwards in the mould blowing process.
I wanted to make use of digital technologies without taking away the personal aspect that craft brings to making art. To achieve this, I used my own hand drawn sketches of architectural forms to create the basis for my designs.
I used clamps to support the walls of my mould, allowing me the freedom to change their angles and orientation to create different silhouettes and shapes. This resulted in a collection of forms that I could construct together to form my own interchangeably curated landscape. I have expanded on my designs, the way I construct my moulds, including more fluid compositions of shapes and added colour to build on this collection.
