Song Dong at the RA

Updated: Jan 17, 2020

I was particularly excited about visiting this exhibition as Song Dong has mixed together glass (a medium I have developed a love and deep appreciation of) and wood, presented in a decaying/slightly derelict architectural manner. Visiting abandoned sites and photographing decay in architecture has been an intense hobby of mine - so seeing this in a professionally exhibited form meant a lot to me.

Song Dong’s intended presentation to me was to communicate the temporary nature of cities and in Asia and how cities are built up and demolished without thought or significance- an everyday occurence. “Song Dong’s art confronts notions of memory, impermanence, waste, consumerism and the urban environment”.

The centre piece of the exhibition, ‘Same Bed Different Dreams’ supposedly blurs the lines between tenses and human experience. Combining such a wide range of media and adding a performance aspect to the piece makes it so busy and intriguing. Having a complicated scene of life built, available for onlookers to view this mishmash of props old and new metaphorically merging experiences.
